When you are in Bangkok, walk as much as you can. Do not do as most tourists and visitors who only move by taxi or tuk-tuk. Walking around Bangkok, you will find more interesting things than you have ever imagined. The hidden Bangkok is really not far from the tourist streets but there are no tourists there. Just a couple of blocks from the main roads, you will find rows of market stalls and restaurants with more authentic foods, people and goods than the tourist traps can offer.

    shopping places in BANGKOK:

Chatuchak Market- Overflowing with souvenirs, food, clothes, art... It’s a great experience even for non-shoppers, and really easy to get to on the Skytrain. Open on weekends only. Next to BTS Mochit station. Very interesting, but it can be very hot and crowded.

Suan-Lum Night Bazaar- Similar to Chatuchak Market with souvenirs, local food and beer. Open daily from late afternoon until midnight. Next to MRT Lumphini station, Great place to eat and hang out in at night.

Siam Paragon- A upmarket mega mall with a department store and many high end boutiques and shops. This is a family destination with something for everyone - Siam Ocean World at the basement should keep the kids busy while the serious shopper is at work. Exit at BTS Siam Station which leads to level 2 of this mall. Connected with other shopping mall : Discovery, Siam Centre and MBK. So if you want to have some serious shopping, this is the perfect place.

Siam Square- Just opposite Siam Centre, start with Soi 5 end with Soi 2. Endless little shops of local designers. Goodies sold from great dresses to vintage bags. Shopping heaven for a budget!

Mah Boon Krong - MBK- A popular mall with hundreds of small shops offering low to mid priced casualwear, shoes, bags, mobile phones etc. etc. Linked to BTS National Stadium Station, or a short walk from BTS Siam Station.

Try http://www.discovery-thailand.com for Thailand information, they also offer discount room rates up to 80% off.

it will be very hot and humid. so take lots of loose fitting cool clothes and plenty of shower stuff, you will probably be showering about three times per day. there are plenty of people who can speak reasonably good english and you can get any sort of food there that you want. one thing that is not so good is the smell though. there are markets all along sukumvit road where you can buy just about anything you want too.

Check out some travel guides from your local library (like the Lonely Planet travel guide) and read up on Thailand. This way you can plan your trip around what interests you. Thailand has nice beaches, national parks, big cities, huge modern malls, elephants, Long Neck Women and lot of unique things to see.

Don't waste all of your time at a beach! Spend a few days in Bangkok right at the beginning of your trip. This way you can get used to the heat and time changes. You can find tours real easy in Thailand, just locate the nearest travel agency to your hotel and see what is on their list of tours. The tour companies pick you up at your hotel and return you there at the end of the trip.

In Bangkok choose a hotel that is near the Skytrain and you can use that transportation to get around the city real easy. When you have your budget worked out and need recommendations for hotels always mention how much you want to pay per night - don't say cheap, or economy - mention a dollar or baht amount.

Below are some good travel forums you can read over for specific information. When you plan your trip also plan on spending the last night in Bangkok too - this way you can do some last minute shopping and not have to worry about connecting flights breaking down and you miss your flight home. Oh yeah, change your money over AFTER you get to Thailand for the best exchange rate. Debit cards, credit cards and travelers checks can be used. If you bring travelers checks don't get the little amounts, take the largest size you can get, you will have a chance to convert any left over Thail baht to your currency at the airport.

    Good luck.

Thailand is modern already. If you want to see something rare, visit Cambodia. It is still natural, no hi tec, the capitol, Phnom Penh, is like a village, you are allowed to smoke weed, not too much s*x tourists, for this more young people from all arround the world and - yeah - give it a try :)

I went there in Nov. '06. I went by myself, with no hotel reservations, didn't know anyone, nor the language. I never even tried Thai food. The guy at the airport said "Taxi?" I said "Shieet, HOTEL!". The guy at this airport help counter hooked it up, though. My hotel was Awesome w/ free DELICIOUS breakfasts, LOTS of extras, secured, reasonably priced, and next door to this multi-floor clothing apparel store with CHEAP prices, across the street from a huge electronics mall, and 5 minute tuk tuk ride to the MBK mall. Here's the link to the hotel on Petchburi... http://centrepoint.com/

BTW, I was told to stay away from the tuk tuk drivers because they're dangerous, but EVERYBODY drives dangerous there. EVERYBODY!

The first day I was in culture shock! The last day, I was sad to leave. The people are really nice, although very few of them spoke english. I told people I was from Hawaii and they had blank expressions. Most of them didn't know Hawaii. That's when I realized how far away from home I was. I eventually started telling people "I'm from America mutha'f*ka!" Oh they knew that. You might want to visit the Golden Palace, Reclining Buddha, and the River, which were "comped' to me by that airport help guy(buddha bless him). Also, the floating market and the Elephant ride. Thailand was CRAZY. d**n, I miss that place. Shieet, I'm about to cry now. It's all your fault. That's it, I'm done typing. j/p

Everyone speaks excellent English in Bangkok or anywhere in Thailand when they want your money; however this skill disappears mysterously when they owe YOU money.

In Bangkok you can get a hotel room for around $25 ~ $30 per night.

There are cheaper places, but you will likely have to share your room/bed with bedbugs or other critters.

I stayed in such a hotel in May 2008.

When in Bangkok, do NOT take the Limousine taxi from Suvra... airport to downtown(you will be accosted by these people as soon as you get through customs and immigration; also, they charge 1 1/2 times the fare of a regular taxi without any extra luxury; just be sure to insist the driver pushes the meter).

You can take a TukTuk(3-wheeled motorcycle) for 20 Baht per trip, but they will not take you to where YOU want to go, but instead drive to some shops with which they have kick-back arrangements. The same goes for guards at the Emerald Palace, who have such arrangements with TukTuk drivers. You will be accosted by them everywhere in Bangkok and Udon Thani.

If you stay in the Nana area of Bangkok(cheap hotels), where the nightlife is, you will be accosted by underage boys looking for money in exchange for s*x, by ladyboys(q***r crossdressers) and by prostitutes.

Tip: Do NOT go elephant trekking; the Thais will try to extort you by asking a certain amount as "tip" for the elephants.

Do NOT go on any tour arranged in Thailand. The price of admission at the gate will be at least 300 Baht more than what you were quoted from information staff.

Do NOT attend a party with friends thrown for you , as they will take all the food, but try to stick YOU with the bill for the entire party.

If you HAVE to take a tour, make sure you arrange it in your hometown if possible. You will save lots of money by doing so.

Eat only the food from the restaurant in your hotel, McDonalds, 7-11 or other convenience store.

Do NOT eat anything that is sold in stalls at night markets.

MBK - the shopping mall at Bangkok is SUPER! You can spend the whole day shopping and eating there.
