I want to know if I need separate antivirus on all of my PCs in a small network. I have a small network of computers at home which includes one desktop and one laptop system. I use Windows XP on both my Desktop and Laptop. My Desktop system uses Norton Antivirus and Firewall protection on a DSL phone line connection to the internet. While on laptop I use wireless internet. Does my wireless laptop need the same protection if my desktop is already protected? Is it necessary to duplicate your antivirus and firewall programs on your wireless laptop? Please help!

Yes, you do need a separate antivirus to be installed on each system. Although both of your computers use the same network, but the antivirus is installed in one of your system, not the network, so you need to have same security in other system. And yes, each system needs software upgrade separately and most probably you will need to do it manually if you have not set the auto update feature turned on. Upgrading antivirus software on one system does not make sure that the other system got the upgrade automatically.
You must know that the firewall and antivirus on the desktop cannot protect the laptop from infection or hacker attack even if both machines use the same Internet connection. And yes, you do not need to purchase different license for desktop and laptop. Get one and use it on both. Hope it helps!
