Android is a software stack for mobile devices that encompasses an operating system, middleware and key applications. Google Inc. purchased the primary developer of the programs, Android Inc., in 2005. Android's mobile functioning system is founded on the Linux kernel. Google and other constituents of the Open Handset Alliance collaborated on Android's development and release. The Android Open Source Project (AOSP) is tasked with the upkeep and farther development of Android. The Android functioning scheme is the world's best-selling Smartphone platform
According to market research firm IDC India, As far as India is concerned, Google owned operating system Android continues to grow in the last quarter. Naveen Mishra, lead analyst for Mobile Handsets Research at IDC India, said in a release announcing the report, "In the Smartphone segment, an increasing number of vendors are displaying confidence in the Android OS, having grown from just one vendor in Q3 2009 to as many as seven in Q3 2010,".
IDC India noted that 9.4 percent of the smartphones shipped in Q3 2010 were based on Android, compared with 2.9 percent in the same quarter last year. The number of Android models also ballooned to 19, up from only two in Q3 2009. "This trend is expected to show healthy growth as the Android OS-based applications ecosystem widens in terms of its reach into the developer community and number of users, both of which will further prompt device vendors to introduce new models. Overall, India smartphone sales are expected to touch 5.96 million units by end of calendar year 2010," Mishra added.
