   It took me a while to learn their website too.
   
   Be sure that when you are looking at their schedules that you have selected "Round Trip".
   
   There is a section that is going to ask you about your return date for your trip. Enter in your information then click the "Continue" or "Next" button at the bottom of the window.
   
   I finally you cannot get their website to get the tickets properly arranged then call Amtrak directly at:
   
   1-800-USA-RAIL
   
   I told the person on the phone I was confused with their website. They were good enough to walk me through using their computer system to make my reservations.
   
   Just for the record, my wife and I travel Amtrak twice per year. We love it. No we are not old fuddy-duddys either. Both of us are 36, but love traveling by Rail!
   
   But ask the person on the phone to walk you through their system. They will be more than happy to help!
   
   The other issue you need to consider are the trains. Normally Amtrak on their long distance runs only service the station once per day, per direction. Depending on the station and trains, you may have a one day layover in your location before you are able to return by train. This may possibly be your situation.
   
   Let me give you an example. The Coast Starlight #11 Southbound and #14 Northbound.
   
   The #11 arrives in San Jose in the morning around 10:00. The #14 arrives in San Jose in the evening around 20:30.
   
   In your case this may be the situation, that the late train is taking you to your destination, and the early train is your return, not vise-versa.
