91 Ranger radio

I am trying to put a factory radio back in my truck. The power comes on but I get only sound from one speaker for about 5 seconds then it stops, also loose the led readout. All the functions of the radio do not work. The wiring harness in the car has one 6 wire connection and the radio I have has one 5 wire connection. Would the different plugs cause the problem?
