The Stooges began when Moe Howard had a vaudeville act with Ted Healy. Before long, Moe's brother Sam, better known as Shemp, joined the act, and a little later, Larry Fine joined. The act went by various names, but eventually settled on Ted Healy and His Stooges. This incarnation of the act made one feature film, in 1930, called "Soup to Nuts", otherwise they concentrated on stage work until 1933, when they signed with MGM. By this time, Shemp had left the act and was replaced by Brother Jerry, better known as Curly. The MGM contract lasted for one year, during which they made both shorts and features. In 1934, the Three Stooges left Healy and signed with Columbia and proceeded to make the long legacy of shorts that have made them world famous. Curly left the act in 1947, and was replaced by Shemp. Shemp died in 1956, and was replaced by Joe Besser, who left the act when the Columbia shorts came to an end at the end of the decade. After this, the Stooges made feature films for several years, with Joe DeRita playing Curly-Joe.
The Three Stooges were an American vaudeville and comical presentation proceeds of the early to mid–20th 100 years best renowned for their numerous short subject films. Their hallmark was physical farce and extreme slapstick. In movies, the Stooges were routinely renowned by their first names: "Moe, Larry, and Curly" and "Moe, Larry, and Shemp," amidst other lineups.
