2004 Pacifica Bushings

My 2004 Pacifica is making a squeaking noise from the passenger rear tire area. When having brakes put on today, i was told it's my bushings. What are bushings, and can i wait to replace them, or does this pose an immediate hazard? Money is an issue right now.
