1989 chevy one ton pick up fuel deliery system

hi we bought this truck after a hundred miles needed the engine replaced and now our mechanic friend can get the engine to start by putting fuel directly into the the engine - but not from either of the fuel tanks - other than the obvious fuel pump replacement - is there any other possibilities that can be wrong?
