I have a bottle of 1970 vintage port Borges and Irmao, purchased in Portugal in 1983.Does the bottle have a value, and would it be OK to drink? We have been keeping it for a Special Occasion but I am concerned that it may have past it is best. I am in the UK; the bottle has been laid in a cool dark cellar.

As far as the price of 1970 vintage port Borges and Irmao is concerned, this is no longer listed by any UK merchant so it is quite difficult to value accurately. However, the price at this point of time could be somewhere around in between £20 and £25. Now the question whether to drink it or not very much depends upon its present condition. If it has not been opened as yet and the seal is still there as it was on the very first day it was released then hopefully there might not and should not be any harm in drinking it. However, it is always better to be on the same side and for this reason if there is an element of risk involved in consuming an item worth forty plus years old. In case if there is something wrong with it, may possibly go on to damage the liver and perhaps cause a certain death. Yet if any confirmation is to be done then a sample of it should be taken to the laboratory for the presence of any poisonous substance.
